This illustration of impressions of Xi'an, themed around culture fusion, is an attempt of combining traditional and modern elements together, so that new ways of composition can be experimented.The inspiration came from a sense of shock I got when I was standing on the ancient wall just near the South Gate - Yong Ning Men in Xi’an last year. This shock came from a total astonishment of a direct comparison between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ - the part of the city within the walls remains pretty much the same as the first time I saw it a decade ago, while the part outside the walls has developed rapidly into a modern city. Using Yong Ning Men as the beginning and the end of the ‘circle’, the core part of the illustration is separated into two parts - the ancient side and the modern side of Xi’an. In order to demonstrate a sense of mystery Xi’an often conveys to the outside world, phoenixes, surrounding the main circle, are added .
