Torishima Memorial, a memorial to extinct birds. The name “Torishima”comes from a lost island in the Pacific Ocean that was discovered by explorer Yamada aki zaburo in 1907 and became a refuge for the short-tailed albatross, which had been hunted to extinction at the time. Since then, however, the island has completely disappeared from the sea.Whether the island was swallowed by the sea, or whether it was just a story made up by explorers, we don't know. A lost island, A haven that doesn't exist. Irreconcilable conflicts have long existed between the human race’s unrestrained evolution and the way of life of other earth inhabitants ever since the origin of Homo sapiens. Rega

The LOGO derives from design element extraction based on the silhouette of the albatross. The incomplete lines create a sense of breakage and incompleteness, suggesting the catastrophe that the albatross and other birds are suffering from.

“Torishima Island Memorial” is a memorial hall set up for extinct birds. The work is designed through a complete VI system and the extraction of bird patterns. Using visual communication as a medium, it takes the form of art books and science popularization graphs and articles to convey to the audience the brand’s system value and the brand’s concept of awe, cherish, and protection of wild birds.

The brand VI system of “Torishima Island Memorial” includes a series of related designs such as brand fonts, packages, promotional posters, business cards, tickets, promotional videos, books, virtual exhibition halls, etc. For the package design, I choose DuPont paper as the core material. The light and tough material properties of DuPont paper are the characteristics of the albatross I want to express. As one of the largest birds, the albatross weigh only a dozen kilograms. The surviving albatross also demonstrates a tough quality.

This is a monumental book. A monument allows us to see the past and helps us imagine what will happen in the future. It stands for “reminder” or “warning”, reminding us of past wrong behaviors and the fact that we should act immediately to protect the albatross and other wild animals. The book cover is covered with warm ink which hides the graphics. It metaphors the change in the albatross’ lifestyle after human intervention. On the side of the book, I print the commemorative text by screen printing. As for the four corners of the book, I choose to fix them with nails, so that the viewer can only browse the book by tearing off pages from the very first page, which is also a metaphor for human slaughter and injury of the albatross. I choose sulfuric acid paper as the material for the entire book. The sulfuric acid paper is superimposed on layers and the underlying graphics gradually blur and disappear, which is the core concept that I want to convey in my design.

The inspiration of the poster design comes from the conflict between human and nature. The poster is made of transparent material. I threw the poster into the air and took photos to record the spatial relationship between the poster and the clouds in the sky.
